Project: Wimbledon Coffee Morning Live
The challenge: Wimbledon Digital, the social media team for the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC), launched a daily self-produced live show to be broadcast online and on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube - the Wimbledon Coffee Morning. It was a brand new initiative for the 2019 tournament. While they had dabbled in this area before, they didn’t just want to create a broadcast. This time they wanted to create something that had a much bigger social-focus, to feature the best players and celebrities but, most importantly of all, to give the global tennis fanbase the opportunity to not only be a part of, but also drive the conversation of the show.
How we did it: After giving the world of video a go in the past, Wimbledon Digital now wanted to go after a younger audience; the people who would be watching the videos on a mobile device rather than a television.
Our Bee-On platform stepped in to offer another level of audience engagement. Tennis lovers were encouraged to get involved with Wimbledon Coffee Morning using the hashtag #jointhestory. Using this hashtag, fans from all over, whether they were in the Wimbledon grounds or at home, could post photos, comments and vote.
That’s where Bee-On came into its element. Using our software the team were able to run live polls and then pull in the audience commentary that was coming in from social media and the #jointhestory hashtag. Then, through our partnership with Grabyo, the poll results and comments were displayed over the stream in their Producer product, moderated and filtered, and then pushed to live when necessary.
Bee-On would then add the finishing touches to the content by managing all real-time graphics which included everything from location bugs and name straps to all on-screen social elements. All of this was done entirely in the Cloud. Our real-time social graphics were run through the Cloud and Grabyo’s Producer was used in Bee-On to switch between the live camera feeds, and our custom graphics.
The results: Wimbledon Coffee Morning ended up being one of the key pillars in AELTC’s live video strategy, and the show received more than one million views throughout the 2019 tournament.
That’s a lot of views and a lot of airtime.
